Friends of Blessed Sacrament,

Earlier this afternoon, I communicated with you the decision to extend Blessed Sacrament’s Spring Break through Friday, March 20, 2020.  This was in response to the public health emergency declared by the City of San Antonio in response to the novel COVID-19 virus.  Since then, Archbishop Gustavo has made the declaration that all Catholic Schools be closed until Friday, April 3, 2020. In addition, the Sunday Mass obligation has been suspended beginning this weekend. Daily masses, funerals, weddings and quinceneras will continue at the discretion of the Pastor. Father Chris Muñoz will be communicating this on the parish website and social media accounts.

I invite you to read the following official communications from the Archdiocese of San Antonio:

I will be meeting with the faculty and staff beginning tomorrow morning to discuss Blessed Sacrament Catholic School’s plan to execute distance learning beginning Monday, March 23, 2020 through Friday, April 3, 2020. We will be utilizing various online tools to ensure the learning process continues.  Daily attendance will be taken ensuring students receive proper credit for assignments and coursework.  Students will not be required to make-up next week as this has been deemed a health emergency. I will also be establishing protocols, dates and times for families to get student books and materials needed for distance learning. This is a fluid situation at the moment, so I will have more formal information posted on the school’s website and social media accounts.

I know the decision to temporarily move to a distance learning platform will come with its challenges, but I am confident that this will promote the safety of our students, parents, staff and larger community. I am aware there will be more questions than answers at this time.  I truly want to thank you for your patience and understanding.  I remain committed to providing you with information as it become available to me through the Department of Catholic Schools and the State of Texas.

Please continue to pray for all those affected – directly and indirectly – by the COVID-19. I also ask that you please check on your elderly neighbors and loved ones ensuring they have adequate food, water and necessary supplies. While this challenge has the potential to cause great disruption, it is also an opportunity for us to be the hands, feet, eyes, ears and mouth of Christ to those around us. This is the perfect opportunity for us to walk the Lenten journey with Christ.

In service of the Incarnate Word and Blessed Sacrament,

Michael Fierro
